Update on my life

Posted on 2007.06.28 at 17:48
Current Mood: contemplativecontemplative
Just a posting to let everyone know what is going on in my life;
First off I recently got a new grand daughter, her name is Julianna Lorene and she is cute as can be. That brings the total up to 6, all under the age of 8.

                                                                                   Julianna Lorene

Also, Jonathan Michael, my year and a half old grandson is doing well. Here is a photo of him and Julianna.

Not a lot else going on except last weekend we went to Disney MGM Star Wars Weekend and saw the actor who played C-3po (Anthony Daniels) also the actor who played the Ewok, and Professor Flitwick of Harry Potter movies,  and Chronicles of Nardia. No autographs this year as the fast passes were already given out. We just took some photos and watched some of the parades/shows.

Me, Chip and Dale

Expedition Everest roller coaster

As far as my health is concerned, I am doing good and just hanging in there at work. My car did break down and now I am looking for a new one. Maybe a new 2007 or 2008 vehicle.

I am sad to say that my best friend Vilma is sick and had to go to the Hospital and emergency room with some health problems. She will be off work for at least a week and probably much, much more. I call her almost every day to check up on her and make sure that she is ok. Her boyfriend and his sister are looking after her while she is recuperating. Sometimes she has trouble expressing her feelings and in trying to explain to me her health problems as she doesn't speak English really well. But I understand enough to know what is happening. My thoughts and prayers are with her on a daily basis.  I am going to try and send her flowers tomorrow to maybe help make her feel better.

I hope all of you, my friends, are doing well and feeling well. If you want you can comment me here or stop by my Myspace and visit. It is at     http://www.myspace.com/elf_leon

Love and *hugs*

Today (Saturday) Was A Good Day

Today was not such a bad day. I got a lot of work done today,
First, I slept in late so I would be rested and feel like doing something, then i got up and fixed an early lunch. Chris had left some rotisserie chickin in the refrigerater from late last night and I made two chicken sandwiches with some of it. man, was it ever good!

After that I ran some things back to my local Library and checked out a few more---mainly movies---some westerns, a few horror movies, and a few from other countries. Those will give me something to do for the next few nights. After that I mowed my yard. Yesterday I had primed the front door I had to install. Yes, I said new front door.
It seems that Christopher's girlfriend got locked out one day when she came home from work. She called Christopher and he came and broke the door and cut the deadbolt out and opened the other lock. This, of course demolished my old door, which was weather worn and about ready for the dump anyways. I had talked a few weeks ago of buying a new one.So we had to hurry out to the Home Depot and get a new one. Christopher mounted the new door temporarily on the old hinges until last weekend when he ripped the old frame out and put in the new one.

I guess Christopher is pretty much my handyman of all trades as he has put in windows and doors, garage doors, shingled and installed roofs, put in rain gutters, helped install siding, tiled floors, fixed holes in drywalls, fixed vehicles, welded materials, pressure washed houses, mowed lawns, cut hair, cooked meals and changed diapers (along with a multitude of other household duties). Therefore I am happy to have him around here.

The front door is now ready for me to paint, both inside and out. I inspected it well and Christopher did a beautiful job. He leveled it well, caulked the cracks and put in new frames around the door. I am impressed! I will paint it next weekend.

Overall, it was a fantastic day. Tomorrow is my last day of vacation and monday I will head back to work. I know Velma is anxious to see me as she called Friday to see how I was doing and asked if I would be there Monday. I am anxious to see her also. I have a little present for her.

Back To Disney World----And My Friend Velma

This past weekend we went to Walt Disney World for a weekend of fun. We didn't realize that it was Spring Break for the Northerners as we had ours two weeks ago and the parks were packed full of people. There was more teens and College students than you could shake a stick at. i would have complained, except that some of the College Coeds standing next to me were pretty hot looking Chics!!! And since it was in the mid 80's temperaturewise it meant----of all things----halters, t's, bikini tops and short shorts.  I shut up about all the people being there.  Ha Ha.

One of the first things we did was to go to Magic Kingdom and ride the rocket ride and it was fun. Especially for the kids. I got a little dizzy but I guess that is normal for an older adult. After that we watched a few shows and got some refreshments---cokes and popcorn. And then saturday night watched the fireworks. As always it was sepctacular. The 'Wishes' show always amazes me and again I took a few pictures. Here are a few:

After staying in a Holiday Inn saturday night we got up sunday and went back to Disney World. The first park we went to was MGM to see the real cars from the Disney movie "Cars". Here are a few photos.

Lightnin' McQueen---he is loud when he is driving.

After that we saw the live musical show of highlights from the hit Disney Movie "HIgh School Musical". It was excellent and full of 'catchy' tunes and some of the dance routines from the movie. I took a few pictures to show here:

After we finished there we left the park and went to Animal Kingdom where we saw the new musical "Nemo the Musical". It had live people singing and operating the fluorescent puppets that made up the show. It was amazing how Disney had accumulated singers that had voices like those in the original movie. I loved this show!! I couldn't show any pictures here as they did not allow photography or videography of it.  Sorry.

After that we left Disney World and went to Downtown Disney to do a little shopping. There I got some shirts and hats and also some new Magical equipment from the Magic Masters magic shop. I had fun there watching some of the tricks.  Later we went to eat pizza at Wonderworks and to see the Out of Control Comedy Magic Show. It was hilarious!

Richard Petty car on display at Downtown Disney

Wonderworks----looks like a building flipped upside down!

The entire weekend was fun. On Monday I got up early and went to work. My best friend Velma (from Domican Republic) was happy to see me as always and here is a photo of her modeling the shirt I bought her at Strawberry Festival in March. She always says hello to all, but she has a long ways to go in understanding all the English. With my help I hope to shorten the time it takes her to become more fluent.

Well Easter is coming up this weekend so I've got to get a few little Easter basket treats for my friends ready. I hope you all have a really great Easter!
Also, don't forget my Myspace site. Click onto   http://www.myspace.com/elf_leon   if you would like to say hello or leave a comment.

Houdini's Body To Be Dug Up

Current Music: "Do You Believe In Magic" by The Lovin' Spoonfull

Yesterday I was reading in the local newspaper that a descendant of Harry Houdini's wants his body to be dug up and tested for poisining. Seems he thinks the Magician was murdered. Here is a copy of the article as appeared on the internet:

A DESCENDANT of Harry Houdini wants his body exhumed to test a theory that the famed escape artist was murdered 81 years ago, a spokesman for the family's lawyer said.

Houdini, who was famed for freeing himself from chains, straitjackets and sealed containers, died in Detroit, Michigan in 1926.

No autopsy was performed but the cause of death was said to be a ruptured appendix. Houdini's appendix was thought to have been ruptured by a punch to the abdomen.

But Houdini's great-nephew George Hardeen believes the performer may have been killed by people who were angry because he debunked their claims they could communicate with the dead.

If his bid to have Houdini's remains exhumed is successful, Hardeen plans to have a team of forensic investigators examine the body for evidence of foul play.

Joseph Tacopina, a prominent New York defence lawyer who charges $750 per hour, is assisting Hardeen.

I know from all the books that I have read and studied on Houdini he had worked for years to disprove Spiritualists and Mediums and show that they were nothing more than tricksters.  That in fact was a good motive for murder. It is reported that one of the members in the cult of Spiritualis and mediums that was after Houdini was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle the author of the Sherlock Holmes books.

I know Houdini had tried for years to contact his dead Mother through Spiritualists and discovered that  they were all fake. Because of the bitterness of not reaching her, he decided that the dead could not come back to make contact. But many people believed that if anyone could cross over from the spirit world that it would be Houdini. He was the ultimate escape artist and they thought  if it was supernaturally possible, he would do it. Apparently it was not as no one has ever proved  for sure that his apparition has been seen or a message received from him.

Taken from the About Internet site:

Since the Halloween night when Bess Houdini turned off the light at her husband's portrait, the séances to contact the dead magician have continued in many parts of the country, both officially and unofficially. It may be impossible to tell whether or not Houdini is really being channeled at any of these annual séances because the secret coded message Houdini devised with his wife has since been revealed - by Bess herself.

"The message was based on both sentimentality and an old vaudeville mind-reading routine," according to Houdini - magictricks.com. "The message was, 'Rosabelle- answer- tell- pray, answer- look- tell- answer, answer- tell.' Bess's wedding band bore the inscription 'Rosabelle,' the name of the song she sang in her act when they first met. The other words correspond to a secret spelling code used to pass information between a magician and his assistant during a mentalism act. Each word or word pair equals a letter. The word 'answer' stood for the letter 'B,' for example. 'Answer, answer' stood for the letter 'V.' Thus, the Houdinis' secret phrase spelled out the word 'believe'."

In 1929, a young medium named Arthur Ford claimed he had successfully received the secret message from Harry Houdini. Upon investigation, however, it was discovered that Ford's claim was a hoax. Bess, it seems, had inadvertently revealed the message to reporters more than a year earlier.

Even though Bess gave up the séances herself, she asked magician Walter B. Gibson to carry on the October 31 tradition. For many years, Gibson, along with several other magicians, held the séances at the Magic Towne House in New York City. Countless other "unofficial" Houdini séances have been held by local psychics across the country throughout the years - all in good fun, but with no definitive proof of so much as a "hello" from Harry Houdini.

Today, the official Houdini Séance is held at The Houdini Museum in Scranton, Pennsylvania. And true to the times, they have been conducting séances on the Internet.

If you are intersted in finding more on Houdini there is plenty on the internet and also at your local Library. There are even books that reveal many of his secrets, I have many of them in my collection as I have studied Magic  ever since I was 8 years old and became a Magician myself soon thereafter, I put on Magic Shows for many, many years.

Magic is a fascinating and exciting pastime or hobby and can bring joy and happiness to your own self and also to the people who watch it. I know it built my self esteem, made me new friends and gave me a better outlook on life. I still perform for family and friends and I am always buying new equipment and tricks as I find them in the stores.

Also check out the movie of Houdini that starred Tony Curtis. It is entertaining and worth watching.

Current Music: "Who's In The Strawberry Patch With Sally" by Tony Orlando a

Today was the last day of the Florida Strawberry Festival so Christopher, Maureen, Jonathan and I all went there to enjoy the beautiful Soring weather, food, fun and music. The first thing we did was to go to the Carnival and play some games and win a few prizes, then we went to look at the exhibits. There were a lot of interesting things this year.

Christooher olaying Carnival games.

An exhibition display

The next thing we did was to go eat a big bowl of strawberry shortcake at one of the treat booths. Mmmmmmm it was delicious as the strawberries are luscious this year!!!!!

Christopher. He is always a laugh riot to be around.

Me and the strawberry shortcake. Elves gotta eat, ya know.

Baby Jonathan having strawberry shortcake!!!! MMMMMMMMMMM good!!!

The next thing we did at Strawberry Festival was to watch some of the shows. There were some good local Rock bands performing, also some  pig races for fun. the best show was the Giant BMX Stunt Show (from California I believe) that had some of the nations top BMX and skateboard Champions that have been featured in the X games and ESPN skateboarding and bicycle stunt championships. The young men were from all different parts of the U.S. and were superb in their performances. Most have been gold medal winners for many years. I still don't know how they can do all the flips, the turns, and spins while in the air and land on the ground with their bodies back on the bicycle seats proper, Same with the skateboards.  It was amazing and  awesome entertainment!!!!

The last thing we did was to go visit some friends that had a saltwater taffy candy stand. They made the saltwater taffy there inside the booth to where you could watch it being made. The candy is delicious and yummy!! Nothing better than a good kiss!!! (see the sign in the photo below).

Our friends taffy candy stand

Our friends the Candyman, his wife, and grandson--------and remember, "The candyman can cause he mixes it with love and makes the world taste good"

Buying some strawberry jelly and preserves to eat at home.

All in all it was a fun day full of good food, fun, beautiful weather, entertainment  and best of all---strawberries. I bought some Strawbery Festival ball caps to wear  and also a bright yellow green Florida Strawberry Festival shirt for my Latina friend Velma. I think she's gonna love it!

There were some big name Country singers to perform tonight (Montgomery Gentry) but we didn't stay to see them. Chrstopher had to go work on his truck.

It was a very, very strawberry day!!!!!!!!

Spring Is Almost Here

Current Mood: happyhappy

Well Spring is almost here, but in Florida I guess it pretty much feels like Spring all Fall and Winter. We had a few short spells of cool weather this year but not as much cold as in some of the past years.
Here we are celebrating with Strawberry Festival, also the Renaissance Festival which lasts until April first.
The Strawberries are luscious this year and the Strawberry Festival is in full swing with strawberries, fun, food entertainment, exhibitions and carnivals. My favorite things there are the strawberry shortcakes, the concerts and the Carnival junk food.

For all you who have missed me the last few months, I have been sick quite often and had some problems with flu viruses that were difficult to get rid of. It started back in October and and affected me through the Holidays and into February/March, I think my immunity is finally coming back to normal and I hope to be feeling great again very soon. Just got to get back into my exercise program.

Not much else going on around here, just going to work and staying home alot. At work I hang around with my Dominican friend Velma (best friends) and we have a fun time there. It seems that the close friendship keeps us both going through difficult times on the job and in our private lives. Sometimes we all need a close friend like that to talk to. She is so wonderful and nice!

Here at home I spend a lot of time with my cat Barney as he loves me more than anyone else. As a matter of fact he is scared of everyone else and will not get close to anyone. He lays on my lap and sleeps while I am on the computer and watching tv. Then he follows me around while I am doing laundry, cooking food or cleaning. The only time he doesn't is when I turn the vacuum cleaner on, and when that happens he runs like a flash and hides somewhere. He loves ice cream and has to have some in a dish when I eat it. He also loves to share my chilli cheese hotdogs. He is my little buddy.

I haven't spent a lot of time reading the Live Journal entries of my friends because of being sick lately, but I have checked in on Malignafairy occaisonally. Seems I always miss it when she does have her cam on. I know she seldom posts Journal entries anymore  and I usually miss those to. I do have a Myspace account and I try to get on it some because of my daughter Melanie who is in the Army. It is one way that I can show her support and keep in contact with her.  I have many other friends on there and they usually write me quite often through emails.
If any of you have Myspace accounts you are quite welcome to become one of my friends there. Just send a request at http://www.myspace.com/elf_leon

Galaxies, Nebulas and the Antikythera Mechanism

Current Music: Nothings Gonna Stop us Now

Unusual Starburst Galaxy NGC 1313
Credit: Henri Boffin (ESO), FORS1, 8.2-meter VLT, ESO
Explanation: Why is this galaxy so discombobulated? Usually, galaxies this topsy-turvy result from a recent collision with a neighboring galaxy. Spiral galaxy NGC 1313, however, appears to be alone. Brightly lit with new and blue massive stars, star formation appears so rampant in NGC 1313 that it has been labeled a starburst galaxy. Strange features of NGC 1313 include that its spiral arms are lopsided and its rotational axis is not at the center of the nuclear bar. Pictured above, NGC 1313 spans about 50,000 light years and lies only about 15 million light years away toward the constellation of Reticulum. Continued numerical modeling of galaxies like NGC 1313 might shed some light on its unusual nature.

M31: The Andromeda Galaxy
Credit & Copyright: Robert Gendler (robgendlerastropixs.com)
Explanation: Andromeda is the nearest major galaxy to our own Milky Way Galaxy. Our Galaxy is thought to look much like Andromeda. Together these two galaxies dominate the Local Group of galaxies. The diffuse light from Andromeda is caused by the hundreds of billions of stars that compose it. The several distinct stars that surround Andromeda's image are actually stars in our Galaxy that are well in front of the background object. Andromeda is frequently referred to as M31 since it is the 31st object on Messier's list of diffuse sky objects. M31 is so distant it takes about two million years for light to reach us from there. Although visible without aid, the above image of M31 is a digital mosaic of 20 frames taken with a small telescope. Much about M31 remains unknown, including how the center acquired two nuclei.

M42: Wisps of the Orion Nebula
Credit & Copyright: Jon Christensen
Explanation: The Great Nebula in Orion, an immense, nearby starbirth region, is probably the most famous of all astronomical nebulas. Here, glowing gas surrounds hot young stars at the edge of an immense interstellar molecular cloud only 1500 light-years away. In the above deep image, faint wisps and sheets of dust and gas are particularly evident. The Great Nebula in Orion can be found with the unaided eye just below and to the left of the easily identifiable belt of three stars in the popular constellation Orion. In addition to housing a bright open cluster of stars known as the Trapezium, the Orion Nebula contains many stellar nurseries. These nurseries contain hydrogen gas, hot young stars, proplyds, and stellar jets spewing material at high speeds. Also known as M42, the Orion Nebula spans about 40 light years and is located in the same spiral arm of our Galaxy as the Sun.

NGC 2174: Emission Nebula in Orion
Credit & Copyright: Dan Kowall (Photonhunter.com)
Explanation: A lesser known sight in the nebula-rich constellation Orion, NGC 2174 can be found with binoculars near the head of the celestial hunter. About 6,400 light-years distant, the glowing cosmic cloud surrounds loose clusters of young stars. Covering an area larger than the full Moon on the sky, this stunning narrow band image adopts a typical color mapping of the atomic emission from NGC 2174. The false-color mapping shows otherwise red hydrogen emission in green hues and emphasizes sulfur emission in red and oxygen in blue. Placing your cursor on the image will reveal an alternative image of the nebula made through broad band filters. The broad band image combines filters in a closer analogy to human vision, dominated by the red glow of hydrogen.

The Outskirts of M77
Credit & Copyright: Ken Crawford (Rancho Del Sol Observatory)
Explanation: Face-on spiral galaxy M77 lies a mere 60 million light-years away toward the aquatic constellation Cetus. Also known as NGC 1068, its very bright core is well studied by astronomers exploring the mysteries of supermassive black holes in active galaxies. While M77 is also seen at x-ray, ultraviolet, infrared, and radio wavelengths, this visible light image highlights another remarkable aspect of the galaxy. In the picture, the data has been enhanced to show outer faint details, following spiral arms and structures that reach far beyond the galaxy's brighter central regions. Including the fainter outskirts, the galaxy's diameter is well over 100 thousand light-years at M77's estimated distance, making it larger than our own spiral Milky Way.

The Antikythera Mechanism
Credit & Copyright: Wikipedia
Explanation: What is it? It was found at the bottom of the sea aboard an ancient Greek ship. Its seeming complexity has prompted decades of study, although many of its functions remained unknown. Recent X-rays of the device have now confirmed the nature of the Antikythera mechanism, and discovered several surprising functions. The Antikythera mechanism has been discovered to be a mechanical computer of an accuracy thought impossible in 80 BC, when the ship that carried it sunk. Such sophisticated technology was not thought to be developed by humanity for another 1,000 years. Its wheels and gears create a portable orrery of the sky that predicted star and planet locations as well as lunar and solar eclipses. The Antikythera mechanism, shown above, is 33 centimeters high and similar in size to a large book.

Halloween Photos

Current Music: The Phantom Lurks At High Noon

Here is a photo of my Halloween Costume for 2006. It turned out ok and I had a lot of fun with it waving at cars passing by during the daytime. On Halloween evening the children had a lot of fun talking "Pirate talk" to me as they received their treats. I had a treasure chest filled with candy and glow in the dark bracelets for each child. Their costumes ranged from fairies, spooks, zombies, cats, princesses, to pirates.
It seemed like pirate costumes were the most popular this year. I guess I guessed right with choosing mine.

Ny candy dish was a treasure chest full of treats.

Overall Halloween was extremely fun this year even though it was on a weekday.
I had about a hundred neighbor kids  come by and they seemed to have a really fun time. The parents had as much fun as I did and it was a nice pleasant night here in Florida. The temperature was in the 60's (degrees F.). I had my trees decorated with ghosts, my 3 porch kids out in the yard, a lit pumpkin in the window, a real white cat in the yard,  spooky posters and covers on the windows and doors and a witch tied to the tree.
It was great!

October Fun In Disney World and Howl-O-Scream Busch Gardens, Tampa Florida

As an end to my vacation week this past week in October I went to Disney World with some of my family for some fun, and also to Howl-O-Scream at Busch Gardens Tampa, Florida.
Disney was decorated in autumn colors and Busch Gardens was done  in Halloween horror style. Both were awesome autumn and Jalloween fun!
Here are some photos that i took in both places just to give you and idea of what we did.

Upon arriving at Disney and traveling to the Magic Kingdom we were given the opportunity to ride in the cab of the Monorail with the cute little woman driver. She did not talk to us much as she spent most of her time speaking on the radio with headquarters. They were putting another Monorail train onto the track and had to make frequent stops in order to make the change. We didn't mind though as we were having fun riding in the front window. Here are some photos.

The Busch Gardens Howl-o-scream Tampa Bay is fun and scary. This year they got rave reviews from the media and was rated number 2 in the Nation for the scariest Halloween fun and entertainment. I was impressed with it.
They had 6 haunted houses and two excellent shows. Of course the scary roller coaster rides were also open for everyone to enjoy. They also had several scare zones with Zombies, Ghosts and other creatures of the night. It was a night of fun I will never forget. We took the VIP tour so ride, haunted house and show acces was immediate with no waits. We also had a free dinner which was excellent.
The tour was for five hours. The special effects were great and the mood was extremely spooky throughout the park as it was from about 8 pm unto 2 am.
